Reflecting Back + Looking Ahead to 2018

January 3, 2018

2017 was a year filled with change. I got a divorce and moved into a new place. Never having lived on my own before, I faced some interesting challenges. Stress and frustration levels were at an all-time high. But I surrounded myself with good people and tried to stay positive. I'm incredibly happy for a new year and a fresh start. Many fun adventures lie ahead and 2018 is already looking bright!

I'm not big on resolutions. We all set them and then break them. So this year, I've set some realistic goals for myself.
1. Read more. - This one is self-explanatory. I only read 8 books in 2017. That's an extremely low number for me. I plan to turn the tv off, put my phone down and read more. Books make me happy. And there's nothing more relaxing than reading in a quiet space.

2. Learn Spanish. - I was able to pick up a Rosetta Stone subscription at a hugely discounted price. Learning another language has been on my bucket list for years. Not only is it a great skill to have in the real world, it also looks great on a resume. Once I complete the online courses, I plan to take advantage of several friends who are fluent in Spanish.

3. Go on a girls' trip. - My last girls' trip was a weekend getaway to Nashville in 2016. This year, I'd really like to take a trip to the Pacific Northwest. I have several friends there and would love to visit and explore. But somewhere closer may end up being more realistic. (Chicago, St. Louis, New Orleans)

4. Redecorate my living room. - I'm extremely pleased with how everything is coming together in my apartment. I have some new furniture, some old furniture and a few gifted pieces. My living room looks a little sad though. I have one ugly orange-ish brown couch and a couple of tables. I envision grey couches and pops of color. I also plan to start a gallery wall. #OneDayAtATime #SingleMomBudget

5. Take my kids on a weeklong vacation. - I have never taken my kids on an extended trip. My plan is to take them to Florida for fall break. The planning and saving starts now.

Those are some great goals! I can't wait to see your before/afters of your living room. I love a good B&A. I have always wanted to learn Spanish, but I just can't get motivated. I tried Rosetta Stone but it didn't work for me. I have a friend who swears by Duolingo, which is free. Again, I haven't been able to motivate myself yet. Let me know if you have better luck than me!
I love a good book. I'm right there with you, they make me happy too. Here's to your fresh start and a very happy new year, my friend!

I'm working on realistic goals for the year too. Sure I want to eat better, lose weight, sleep more, get organized, blah blah... but doing the same thing as you - trying to find stuff that are real goals and focus on those. Great ones for you!!

Can’t wait to see your best and worst dressed of the golden globes! It was such a history making GG with everyone wearing black but I loved everyone’s unique approach to wearing the same color.

PNW! PNW! I love your goals! I'd love to try Spanish again. A year in high school does not cut it. I can tell you how to ask for a library or buy some lemonade though. Ha!
